The Most Wimbledon Time of the Year

My happy place has returned. Hours to sit in front of the TV and enjoy high quality tennis. Ah, Wimbledon. I love you so. Gentlemen’s Singles AND Doubles. Women’s singles and doubles. Finding the new players to root for. Discovering the players I just CAN’T root for.

That dreaded word… ‘suspended, which means I must anticipate the inevitable rain delays. And even more exciting… those crazy upsets.

How many times do I find myself cheering on my favorite player, only to find that they are eliminated by an unseeded rival. That’s what makes Wimbledon so exciting!

And another added element I’ve discovered this year… tracking the amount of money these folks get for stepping on the court each round! Granted, there is a lot of money involved to train and travel to be where they are at the level they are playing, so mad props to them, but it is a crazy amount of money for my brain to handle.

I am very grateful to be watching Wimbledon (on ESPN+!) this year because I could not watch the French Open (it was on Fubo… can’t afford THAT), so if you follow the streaming/TV world, that means I also can’t watch Euro 2024.

I’m not mad, though. Wimbledon is fantastic. And there’s a lot more to come.

Most of all it makes me want to play tennis again, but my poor arthritic knees just can’t handle it. Three surgeries including an ACL reconstruction later just won’t tolerate that kind of stopping and turning on a hard court.

So, spectating it is! And grateful I am. Currently, Tiafoe and Alcaraz are hammering it out on Centre Court, and I couldn’t be happier.

Most importantly, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a nod to this day in history in 1975 when Arthur Ashe was the first African American Men’s Wimbledon Champion. What a legacy.
